Oscars 2008Jan 22nd, 2008. Of the 63 foreign films originally submitted for consideration to the Oscar nominations, the top five have been selected today. Two of these are European - The Counterfeiters by Stefan Ruzowitzky, from Austria, and Andrzej Wajda's Katyn, from Poland. This is only the second time that an Austrian film makes it amongst the five films nominated for Best Foreign Film; the first time was in 1986, with '38: Vienna Before the Fall. Despite much fuzz, Cristian Mungiu's 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days (Romania) has not been selected. Other European movies in other categories are: Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis (France), running for best animated film, British film The Atonement by Joe Wright running for Best Picture and in numerous categories, Franco-American The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Julian Schnabel, with four nominations including Best Director. Marion Cotillard gets a nominations in the Best Actress category for her performance as legendary singer Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose. Javier Bardem gets his second Academy nomination, after Before Night Falls (2000), for his performance in No Country for Old Men. The ceremony will take place on the evening of February 24.
